Peter is a famous playwright. Peter is writing a new play. It's about Pete, a former actor who's writing his first play. Pete says he's developed a whole new theory of play writing —

he makes it up as he goes along.

 

Both Pete and Peter are going though a mid-life crisis: 

they want to find the decent fellow who's been hidden below the surface for the past 50 years or so.
